Sony Executives Give First Look At Next-Gen PlayStation 5

PlayStation 5 Is Coming

Sony has finally started releasing details about their anticipated PlayStation 5 video game console. Sony representatives say that the new PlayStation will be one of the most powerful gaming systems ever. Although, it will still be a few years before gamers can get their hands on the next generation system.

In an interview with Wired, Mark Cerny, lead system architect of the PlayStation 4, told fans what to expect.

It will still be a few years before the PlayStation 5 hits stores, but we still don’t know exactly when. Cerny didn’t give us a release date for PlayStation 5, but did say it has been in development for 4 years.

Cerny also gave some details on the performance specs of the PlayStation 5. Cerny’s description of the new PlayStation was extremely technical, but it’s clear that the system will prioritize speed and power.

The AMD Chip

Cerny said that the PlayStation 5 will offer much more than just a graphics upgrade.

The system will contain an AMD computer chip which will allow developers to create some extremely complex 3D environments. The new chip creates some of the most realistic worlds seen in virtual reality. This high performance is made possible by a new capability called ray tracing.

Ray tracing allows developers to simulate light bouncing from object to object, almost exactly as it would in real life.

“If you wanted to run tests to see if the player can hear certain audio sources or if the enemies can hear the players’ footsteps, ray tracing is useful for that,” Cerny says.

“It’s all the same thing as taking a ray through the environment,” he added.

Virtual Reality

Cerny also said that virtual reality will be an important part of the new PlayStation’s lineup.

“I won’t go into the details of our VR strategy today, beyond saying that VR is very important to us,” Cerny said.

Luckily, gamers won’t be forced to buy additional equipment if they already have PlayStation VR. The same virtual reality equipment that Sony sold for PlayStation 4 will also work for PlayStation 5.

“The current PSVR headset is compatible with the new console,” he added.

PlayStation VR, the virtual reality headset that Sony created for the PlayStation 4, sold over 4 million units since 2016.

Backward Compatability

One of the most exciting details about PlayStation 5 is that it will be backward compatible. Thanks to this feature, you will be able to play your PS4 games on the new console.

PlayStation boss Jim Ryan told the Telegraph that, “Backward-compatibility, in a networked era, becomes something that is incredibly powerful… The gaming community is somewhat tribal in its nature. Backward-compatibility gives us the opportunity to migrate that community from PlayStation 4 to next gen using the ability to play the PS4 games they have on their next generation console. So we see this, given the size of the community that we’ve been able to accumulate over all these years and hard work on PlayStation 4 as a really critical success factor for us. We think it’s incredibly important.”

Record Breaking Sales

The current generation PlayStation 4 has now sold over 91 million units. This is more than double the sales of PlayStations largest competitor Xbox One, which sold around 40 million units. The PlayStation 4 has sold nearly 10 million units more than the PlayStation 3.

Even with these massive sales numbers, the PlayStation 4 is still not the best selling Sony video game console.

The newest model still lags behind the first two offerings from Sony. PlayStation 1 managed to sell 102 million units, while PlayStation 2 sold a whopping 155 million units. The PlayStation 2 was not just a gaming system, it was also the first DVD player that many families owned.

How Much Will It Cost?

One detail that everyone wants to know is how much the PlayStation 5 will cost.

Cerny did not give many details about the price, he would only say that:

“I believe that we will be able to release it at an SRP [suggested retail price] that will be appealing to gamers in light of its advanced feature set.

Industry experts expect that the price will need to be reasonable for Sony to succeed. The PlayStation 3 was one of Sony’s worst selling consoles due to its high price point at release. Meanwhile, the PlayStation 4 had an edge on its competitors because it was reasonably priced.

Flying Cars Have Finally Arrived!

For generations, flying cars have been a popular futuristic fantasy, shared by people all over the world. Unfortunately, this is an invention that has remained in the realm of science fiction, so we are still driving on the ground.

Now, after all this time, it seems like flying cars may actually become a reality.

A new air taxi startup called Alaka’i Technologies has released a prototype of a hydrogen powered flying car. The company unveiled the demo of the vehicle this May, at the offices of BMW Designworks in Los Angeles.

The flying car prototype is fully functional and able to hold up to five passengers.

A spokesperson for the company said that the prototype would be making its first flight “imminently.”

BMW Designworks will be somehow contributing to the design of the vehicle, but the extent of their involvement is unclear.

Alaka’i Technologies features an all-star team with engineers and executives from NASA, Raytheon, Airbus, Boeing, and the Department of Defense.

The Capabilities Of The Alaka’i Skai

The vehicle, called Skai, can fly for up to 4 hours and cover 400 miles on a single trip. Unlike the electric cars on the market like the Tesla, you can power up a Skai in just 10 minutes.

While Alaka’i is an air taxi company, that market is still not mature enough for them to enter into yet. Instead, Alaka’i will first use Skai for emergency services, search and rescue missions, and hauling cargo.

These industries will be easier for Alaka’i to enter because regulations and certifications are less stringent.

For rescue and transport industries, certification will take no longer than a few months. Meanwhile, certification to carry passengers for commercial purposes typically takes between 5 and 10 years.

This will allow them to start getting their product onto the market by next year.

Hydrogen: An Expensive Fuel Source

While this technology is promising, high production costs could hinder the development of hydrogen powered vehicles.

Hydrogen fuel cells are very efficient, but unfortunately, hydrogen is also extremely rare. Due to its rarity and the increasing demand for it, hydrogen can get incredibly expensive.

As expected, the Skai is no bargain. The company estimates that the vehicle will cost roughly $200,000. However, they have stated that the first few models that they release to the public will be significantly more expensive.

The Future of Skai

Despite this massive cost, Alaka’i has high hopes for its revolutionary flying vehicle. The company expects that it will have a production volume of roughly 10,000 vehicles each year. This is a staggering number for the industry, as no other company produces more than 700 aircraft annually.

The initial aircraft released by Alaka’i will require a pilot to manually operate the vehicle. However, the company plans on releasing a fully autonomous aircraft, once the market matures.

NASA veteran engineer Bruce Holmes, who serves on Alaka’i’s board of directors told Wired that, “Our goal was to keep it simple, and we focused on accommodating a certain mission profile that’s repeatable over an entire day.”

Previous Developments In The Industry

Believe it or not, this actually won’t be the first aircraft powered by a fuel cell. In 2008, Boeing modified a small plane to power its conventional propeller with a battery.

Boeing used a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell, with a lithium-ion battery hybrid system to power the aircraft. However, this is obviously an entirely different type of vehicle. The Skai is more of an electric flying car, and less of an electric airplane.

The Russian manufacturer Tupolev built a prototype hydrogen powered version of the Tu 154 airliner, named the Tu 155, which made its first flight in 1989.

Liquid hydrogen has about four times the volume for the same amount of energy of kerosene based jet-fuel. However, hydrogen is about one-third of the weight of kerosene jet-fuel for the same amount of energy. This means that the hydrogen aircraft would require about one-third of the fuel weight to achieve the same performance.

The City Of Baltimore Has Been Taken Over By Hackers Using NSA Tools

Hackers have recently taken over the computer systems for the City of Baltimore. Many of the City’s operations have been at a standstill for weeks as officials scramble to find a solution.

The hackers are demanding that the city pay a ransom in order to regain control of the network. The ransom started at 13 Bitcoin, which is roughly $100,000 at its current price. However, the hackers said that the city will owe an additional $10,000 for every day after the deadline.

The attack occurred at the beginning of this month, on May 7th. In a ransom note, the hackers gave a deadline of May 17th.

“We won’t talk more, all we know is MONEY! Hurry up! Tik Tak, Tik Tak, Tik Tak!” the ransom note read.

Basic Services Frozen

In the attack, the hackers managed to seize 10,000 of the city’s most vital systems. Once they had control of the network, the hackers were able to put a freeze on basic city services.

The hackers locked the city out of email and voicemail, so city employees set up Gmail accounts as an alternative. The employees were locked out of their Gmail accounts as well, since all of their addresses were marked as spam.

In a later statement, Google explained that this was a glitch in their automated systems.

“We have restored access to the Gmail accounts for the Baltimore city officials. Our automated security systems disabled the accounts due to the bulk creation of multiple consumer Gmail accounts from the same network,” the statement read.

For the past month, Baltimore residents couldn’t pay their bills, and city employees were unable to log into their accounts.

Will The City Pay The Ransom?

Baltimore Mayor Jack Young, initially said that the city is working to restore their networks. Young also said that the FBI is assisting the city in the investigation.

“The restoration efforts also require that we rebuild certain systems to make sure that when we restore business functions. We are doing so in a secure manner,” Young said.

Young initially said that the city would not consider paying the ransom under any circumstances. The mayor said that to pay the ransom would be like “rewarding bank robbers for robbing banks.”

However, it seems that now the city may be desperate and running out of options. In an interview this week, the mayor revealed that he is thinking about paying the ransom.

“To move the city forward, I might think about it,” Young said.

NSA Tools

According to a report from the New York Times this week, the hackers carried out the attack using an NSA hacking tool. The tool is called EternalBlue and it was initially developed by the NSA before hackers leaked it to the public.

After hackers used the tools in various cyber attacks, Microsoft blamed the NSA for the crisis. Microsoft said that the agency had a practice of “stockpiling vulnerabilities,” which prevented companies from patching their software.

Previous Hack

In a separate attack last year, Hackers shut down Baltimore’s 911 systems for an entire day. Hackers carried out a similar attack in Atlanta around the same time. In fact, this is a problem that cities all over the country are currently facing. Baltimore is just one of over 20 different cities that hackers have hit with cyber attacks in the past year.

Outdated Technology

Most of these exploits wouldn’t work on your personal computer because only older systems are vulnerable to them. The various cities that have been experiencing cyber attacks are obviously on very outdated systems.

The EternalBlue exploit targets a vulnerability in Microsoft’s Windows XP and Vista systems, which are generations behind most consumers.

According to a recent report from WeLiveSecurity, “there are currently almost a million machines in the wild using the obsolete SMB v1 protocol.”

“Poor security practices and lack of patching are likely reasons why malicious use of the EternalBlue exploit has been growing continuously since the beginning of 2017, when it was leaked online,” the report continued.

Since businesses and governments rarely update their systems, many high-profile targets are currently at risk.

Baltimore officials are currently using manual workarounds to complete real estate deals, but many of the city’s services are no longer functional.
